Daily Cleaning

  • Orthodontics requires a high level of ‘oral hygiene’ to help your treatment be successful.
  • It’s important to brush your teeth and gums at least twice a day and if possible after lunch. Poor brushing may lead to permanent white marks on your teeth as a result of decalcification. We may remove your braces if brushing is poor to minimise further risk. Instructions on the correct brushes to use and brushing techniques will be discussed with you when we fit your braces.
  • We also sell Orthodontic Starter packs to help you stay on track with your oral hygiene – ask at reception.

Tooth Whitening

  • We offer tooth clinical strength whitening as an additional service
  • We recommend you do this at the end of your treatment.
  • The product can be purchased under prescription and used at home.
  • Whitening can be requested at the start of a treatment plan and included in your overall treatment fee with the cost spread out over the 12 months interest free plan.
Regular Dental Care

Regular Dental Care

  • Your regular checkups should still be kept with your general dentist throughout treatment as they will check your general dental health.
  • Orthodontics requires a high level of ‘oral hygiene’ to help your treatment be successful and we’ll give you recommendations to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to of the most common questions – call us if you can’t find your answer here.

How long does treatment take?

On average treatment takes between 18-24 months. The time varies depending on each individual case.

How often will I need appointments?

When you are wearing braces or aligners we like to see you every 6-10 weeks for a review and adjustment appointment. This time can vary depending on each individual.

Will I need time off work or school?

Yes you will need to consider time away from school or work to have your appointments. As it is a medical appointment you are entitled to time off and we can also provide notice of attendance.

Will I be able to eat normally?

For the first few days after your initial fit or adjustment appointment you may want to eat softer foods as your teeth may feel tender. After a few days this will pass and you will be able to eat normally. However, eating hard, chewy and sticky foods will break your brace. We advise keeping sugary foods and fizzy drinks to a minimum.

What should I do if I break my brace?

Contact the surgery as soon as possible and we will book you an appointment to repair the breakage. In the meantime, if it is causing discomfort try placing wax over the problem area. Repeated breakages will lengthen the over all treatment time, so be careful!

My teeth "feel loose", is this normal?

It’s completely normal for your teeth to feel slightly loose, this is because the teeth are being moved into new positions.

Why do I have gaps between my teeth I didn’t have before?

These gaps have formed because we are creating and filling space between your teeth to align them. The gaps will be closed before the brace is removed.

How long do I have to wear retainers for?

Retainers need to be worn for as long as you want straight teeth. You may be able to reduce how often you wear the retainers, but if you stop completely your teeth will move.

When do I wear my retainers?

We advise that removable retainers are worn full time for the first 3 months and then part-time, usually whilst you sleep, after this. To begin with you will need to wear you retainers every night, but sometimes this can be reduced to every other night. We will advise of how often you need to wear your retainers and if you can reduce wear.

Is there only one type of retainer?

No. We offer two types of retainers:

• Removable (Hawley) retainer to be worn at night or
• A bonded wire (bonded behind your front teeth) with a clear removable ‘gum shield like’ retainer to wear at night.

Does Orthodontic treatment hurt?

Orthodontic treatment can be uncomfortable after your initial fit appointment and when adjustments are made, but this only last a few days and can be managed with painkillers like those you’d take for a headache. You may also develop some ulcers from the brackets, especially after the initial fit appointment. This can be managed by placing small pieces of wax onto the brackets to prevent them rubbing, these are available from reception.

Do I still need to see my regular Dentist?

Yes, you will still need to see your regular dentist for check-ups and general treatments, failure to do so may result in your losing your NHS registration with your dentist.

Will orthodontics affect my speech?

Some patients lisp when there braces are initially fitted, but soon adapt and stop.

Can I still play contact sports with a brace?

Yes you can, however we advise you wear a gum shield to protect your brace. We can make you a gumshield or you can purchase one from a sports shop.

How often do I have to wear my functional/removable appliance?

If you have a functional or removable appliance you need to wear it as often and for as long as possible to get the best results as quickly as possible.

Will my teeth move back once the brace is removed?

No, because we will provide you with a retainer, which will hold your teeth in their new alignment.
